GETTING AROUND JFK AIRPORT
Operating 24 hours every day, AirTrain makes frequent stops around the JFK airport. It's JFK's train service that takes you between the airport and the MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trains, MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) subways as well as other areas of importance including the airline terminals, parking lots, hotel shuttle areas, rental car facilities and local buses. Budget travelers who don't mind carrying their own luggage will find the new AirTrain JFK a welcome addition to New York City's extensive public transit offerings. AirTrain is free within the terminal area and to the hotel and car rental shuttle buses at Federal Circle. Entering or leaving AirTrain at the Jamaica or Howard Beach stations costs $5. The fare must be paid by MetroCard, which can be purchased with cash, a credit card or an ATM card. There are vending machines at Jamaica and Howard Beach stations where one can pay for the AirTrain and also pay subway and Long Island Rail Road fares. Children under 5 ride free.
AirTran is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which also operates the airport and AirTrain Newark. By connecting with LIRR trains and NYC subways at Jamaica and Howard Beach stations in Queens, AirTrain makes it possible for travelers to avoid traffic and ride the rails to and from the airport.

There are flight status displays in many AirTrain stations, including Jamaica and Howard Beach. All station stops are announced via recorded messages.
The fastest trip time to Manhattan is via the Long Island Rail Road at the Jamaica AirTrain connection. From Jamaica to Penn Station in midtown Manhattan on the Long Island Rail Road takes 20 minutes. At Penn Station in midtown Manhattan, you can make connections to New Jersey Transit and Amtrak trains. Travelers to Long Island or Brooklyn can use the Long Island Rail Road from Jamaica; subway trains from both Howard Beach and Jamaica also serve Brooklyn.
The only disadvantage to traveling by AirTrain is that it is not always a great value for families and groups so you might be better off taking an SUV car service to the airport instead if you are traveling with a large group.
